Becoming a Certified Public Accountant
Entry Routes
There are two routes that lead to the CPA Professional Evaluation. To register with the CPA Institute, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- Complete an Accountancy degree in a university ensuring that the following disciplines are properly covered; Financial Accounting 3, Auditing 2, Taxation 2, Management Accounting 2, Government/Municipal Accounting 2 or 3 and Financial Management
- Completion of another qualification which confers practising rights; then top up for the Government/Municipal Accounting
Admission requirements
- Entry requirements are that one must have a degree in Accountancy and Auditing from recognized universities for one to be admitted to any of the three schemes on offer namely Certified Public Sector Accountant, Certified General Accountant and Certified Auditor.
- Professional Examinations are set and marked in conjunction with CPA Ireland;
- Members requiring audit qualification are required to perform 4,000 training hours.
- Trainees join a training programme for their mentored training (articles) where they must complete 4,000 hours of training and write part one and part two examinations during this period or after. Upon completion of the training and examinations the graduates apply for membership. At the same time the graduates are required to submit evidence of adequate practical training experience. The graduates should be recommended by their trainers and a member to the Council for admission as a member and the subsequent issuance of certificate of membership.
- Part one examinations are run by the Institute while the part two is run in conjunction with the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Ireland. The Irish Institute sets the examinations for scheme three, while the Institute examines the taxation paper which is based on the Zimbabwe Tax Laws.

- A 'CPA' is a fully qualified professional accountant and a member of institute of Certified Public Accountants in Zimbabwe.
- The Institute of Certified Public Accountants is one of the country’s main accountancy bodies.
